Some transit systems are now going cashless. You should see the look on the conducters face on MARC/B&0 when I try to buy a ticket from Brunswick MD to Martinsburgh WV with quarters and dimes. Last couple of years he has said just sit down and dont even bother. Everyday the MARC conducters had to go into the MARC Brunswick Station and turn in the cash with a couple of sheets of paperwork before they go home. Meanwhile there counterparts on the CSX/VRE line just hop in their cars and just go home. My experance trying to pay with loose change on Metro North is that since I am only going up 3 stops is that they dont have time to fumble with change when they have 500 other people to deal with. So the following picture is from Buffalo NFTA whoes transit police issued a summons for a POP failure to pay ticket-

And this is why Amtrak is working on scanning tickets.  Less paperwork to handle.

If all an agency will take is plastic, consider buying gift cards with your cash.  They're available virtually everywhere, and are only so traceable.  Then you can buy your ticket at a kiosk and go about your business like everyone else.

Link to picture in the original post doesn't work.  While we wait for the OP to fix it, here is a start on some of the applicable statistics.

So this is what was found at my local court for a transit violation on top of our ticket box....-
