Not seen a lot on film but UP using the wyeville connection between the ex-C&NW twin cities line and CP Rail ex-Milwaukee Road line in Western Wisconsin. UP uses CP trackage rights from this connection west of Tomah all the way to Winona, MN. The first footage of the train shows it departing the CP main in the background on a sharp curve away headed for the Altoona Sub on the ex-C&NW main. Interesting crossing of a 4 lane Highway 12 (no gates?....yikes).

Nice..thanks! That is kind of odd with the 4 lane hwy and no gates,,especially with the way folks drive these days, impatient, distracted, nutty.

Major highways like that actually are quite common to have without gates. For one they're really wide to try to get gates all the way across without a median. Also, in the event of a false activation, it's much more difficult to deal with a major road being backed up when the gates are down, versus drivers being able to legally make a stop-and-go move at the crossing when no gates are present.
So really, the size of a crossing you wanna put gates across ends up meaning the biggest crossings generally don't get gates.
OK Thanks..makes sense. What would make even more sense is an underpass or overpass.
