This would also allow for track warrants/EC1's/Form D's to be sent electronically, with some form of biometric verification that would replace the readback.

That will soon be done via PTC.  Your limits will be given to you/rolled up on the PTC display. 

Scuttlebutt was that we were going to be issued tablets of soem sort for our rulebooks.  (just what I need - something else to keep charged)

Local conductors currently use electronic tablet things for their work orders.  But they didn't load up the rulebooks in them for some reason.   I think we can use our personal electronic devices for rules and stuff, but honestly, I'd rather just use the book for now.  Seems to be easier to stay out of trouble that way. 

CN has been saying for years that they want to get rid of paper train journals & rulebooks, and put everything onto a computer.  It goes all the way back to an early 1990s proposal to install computer terminals in the Conductor's desk on locomotives, to allow instant updating of track lists in the system.  But that never happened for whatever reason, and the proposals evolved over time into the ipads of today. 

But I still haven't seen one north of the border.  Maybe the IT guys will start working on them once they finish the new timekeeping system, which supposedly will eventually replace the 1980s-vintage SRS-based CATS we currently use (you can navigate it without using the mouse, I don't think they weren't invented yet when it was designed).  We've been waiting for the new system for at least 6 years...  so I'm not holding my breath for the ipads.

I prefer the paper anyway.  You can write notes and reminders on it, and paper switch lists are easier to stuff into pockets than an ipad, and when wrapped in the plastic sleeves we have they are essentially waterproof too.

And I refuse to use my cellphone at work on principle, even for company business.  When I'm working a yard shift or turn with no AFHT layover I just leave it at home or in my locker, guarantees I can't get into trouble with it.
