Right next to were the old Imperial Sugar plant was, Ulrich street borders the place....the UP (old SP) main is one of the major routes into Houston.

Story caught my eye because of the name of the cross street!

Houston Chronicle, May 1

A Fresno man caused a portion of the Union Pacific railroad to shut down Monday morning, after he veered off the highway, drove his car down the railroad tracks and was hit by a train in Sugar Land.

The train and the man's car collided around 5:45 a.m., near the intersection of Main Street and Highway 90A, which the railroad runs alongside, said Sugar Land spokesman Doug Adolph.

The man had entered the railroad crossing at Brooks Street. Instead of staying on Brooks Street and crossing the tracks, he turned off of the road and onto the rails.

The man headed eastbound. He only made it about a 10th of a mile before a Union Pacific train slammed into his car head-on, Adolph said.

The train pushed the man's car westbound for about a third of a mile, reaching the tracks' intersection with Ulrich Street. There, the train stopped and threw the car from the tracks.

The man was transported by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston in serious condition. He is expected to survive. He will be tested for intoxication, Adolph said.

Several railroad crossings were closed for an hour and a half while Union Pacific employees inspected the tracks for damage, Adolph said.

As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed.

Couldn't figure that out until I looked at the "baseball super" at the bottom of the screen in the embedded video.  Obviously, somebody mis-heard when told the accident was at Eldridge Street.  It is even funnier because the actual video is nearly a mile east of Eldridge Street near the intersection of Main and Kempner.  I guess it's about par for the course for TV station navigation.

So, it looks like the car was hit by the "Sugarland Express" anyway.  Steven Spielberg unavailable for comment, I guess.

Had he, perchance, just watched Groundhog Day?

Messed things up around Suger Land?  Wait 'till Jennifer Nettles hears about this!

Ain't gonna be pretty!
