At least it wasn't a picture of NKP756 or any other such nonsense.

Bruce, I have to agree - although I think the "FINANCIAL TRIBUNE - First Iranian English Economic Daily" hardly qualifies as "mainstream" media . . . But after reading it - what else can we expect from what's at best a news blurb, and at worst a "puff piece" of advertising ?
Good "photoshop" job erasing the herald and/ or road name on the lead unit, though (first 2 look to be ATSF/ BNSF, but 3rd is UP yellow). Note however, no byline to credit the photographer. Maybe the reason they had to use a US photo is because anyone taking photos of a railroad in Iran might be shot ? (as it supposedly was in the old USSR)

The GP60M never made it to Iran as far as I know either. It gets worse when it is anything to do with OTR trucking also. Everyone thinks we are SWIFT or Schiender in pictures.

Amazing what ideas must wander around inside the "Media-type" Heads, this sort of thing just leaves an 'average' Joes, shaking their heads. Seems that constantly foisting off propagana, just makes them think they can get away with any B.S.

Nah - I think it's legitimate ignorance. Much like the "talking heads" on virtually any TV news program, today's print "reporters" just deal with what gets handed to them. We're probably lucky they didn't use a Lionel train.
Of course, we're here speaking from a position of knowledge. About 99% of their audience doesn't know any better, and would think nothing of it if they did use NKP765 in their image. After all, they're a backward country, right?

Word of caution. This seems to be a "semi official" publication of Iran. You might not want it noted you are going to that web site ? That is probably the lack of good file pictures as well.
Why would anyone do such a neat job of photo-processing it? Why not just blur what is obviously wrong with the scenario instead of working at obliterating the obvious road names and such in such a neat manner?

This is a Siemens unit from 2010 and looks a lot like an SC44 Charger (not surprisingly). It is indicated as an ER24PC, so is around 3200HP with presumably an MTU engine.
But it would be wrong to think of Iran as only operating old EMD export units from the era of the Shah.

RAI operates a bunch of interesting units. The ER24PCs are direct derivatives of the Siemens EuroRunner series ER20s, and have visible similarities with broad guage units ER20CFs built for Lithuania. I think more ER24PCs are being built for RAI.
The other modern diesel Iran has recently purchased is an Alstom Prima model, most of which were license built in Iran. They have tendered a repowering as the Ruston prime movers are apparently not succesful.
Interestingly, RAI seems to have recieved US-built GT26CWs and GT26CW-2s through 1984, though at least some of the latter were built in South Korea by Hyundai. They recieved a few of the Electroputure Alco-251 powered license units that weren't too succesful in Europe, and a bunch of Canadian-built GE export power. If the political climate were different, I'd love to visit.
