BioDiesel Article on Electricty Generation using Locomotives
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 4, 2004 3:07 AM
Been a Trains subscriber for years, just now found this website....................

If I'm not crazy, (wife says that's questionable! [:D]), I remember reading an article in Trains about a guy that bought several former B&N locos, towed them out to California during their electricity shortage a year or so ago, converted them to Bio Diesel, then sold the electricity to the power grid owners.

Anybody got a link or info on this?

TIA (Thanks in advance).................[8D]

Post here or e-mail..............

doing reasearch on this for a project and needed info.

The use of retired locomotives as peaking plants should come as no surprise. B&M's Speed Merchants were used by a scrapyard to provide electricity for their machinery.

Before gas turbines replaced many of them, most public utility peaking plants used railroad-sized diesel engines attached to alternators. The advantage is that they can be brought on line quickly when demand for electricity spikes.
