Revised Login Problems
Posted by M636C on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 5:46 PM

The changes to forum login have received some attention on other forums.

The change hit me this morning.

Although the login worked and I was welcomed to the forum, my Trains subscription wasn't recognised and I couldn't read the News Wire and was prompted to subscribe (again?)

Has anyone else had this problem?

My problem is that unless I leave the "Keep me Logged-in" checkbox 'checked', it won't log me in.  It just comes back to the 'non-logged-in' type display.  I tried several times, double-checking that I had typed my e-mail ID and my password correctly.  Once I left the checkbox 'checked' then it processed my log-in.

Yes, it took me a little while to determine just how I needed to type my name in to log in. I have always been a bit annoyed by the occasional demands that I log in becasue I have never logged out--and this morning's request irritated me more. However, I was successful (as this post shows).

I just had to log back in.  Did have to remember which email I used to create the account...

I think the time spent updating the log-in process would have been better spent on fixing the problem with spell czech not werking proporlie.

Yes, I don't think that Spel Czech caught the errors in the last two words. Smile

It's bad enough that I have to proof my posts for grammar and such, but I appreciated the catching of spelling errors (would that we also had a usage checker, so that "strait" will not be used when "straight" is neededDevil)

I found an extra section that asks me to insert my mailing address to access the News Wire.

Sadly I can't use it since it doesn't accept a "State/Province" outside the USA and Canada.

I can't just pick one at random because it wont match the "ACT Australia" on my mailing label.

They don't let you type in what's actually on the label, either.

So I'm locked out until somebody realises that the system doesn't work for anyone outside the USA and Canada.

You wonder just how stupid the people who designed the package are.

Many years ago I had just arrived at Washington National Airport and wanted to use a payphone (as we did in those days). Having just arrived from the UK I had no change in US money.

So I found a phone which took a credit card and inserted my Visa card. I was asked to give a US Zip code for my billing address in order to validate my use of the card. The card had no US billing address, of course.

After heated discussion with the operator (at least a real person if not sympathetic) I managed to beg some change from a local shop in the terminal to make the call.

That must have been 1990....

But I've hit the same problem again, for the first time since 2003...

But developers of such systems never learn that there are (paying) customers outside the USA and Canada.

My browser has a 'save login & password' feature.  I use it.  I also put the logiin and password for each site that requires it with bookmark that the browser uses to access the site.  With various internet sites wanting 'stronger' passwords - the only way I can remember them is to put all the necessary info with the bookmark used to access the site.

I tried to login, but it would not take, so I had to put in my mailing address, etc.  They said they would e-mail me the update info, but I never received it.

I had a "Fingerprint reader" on my laptop and used it in the same way.  It would look at the webpage and fill in the data for any fields that I defined for that page and associated with my fingerprint.  Worked great until Yahoo decided to split the log-in sequence to two pages... I have to enter my ID on one page and click Log-in, then I get a new page to enter my password and click Log-in again.  Fingerprint reader can't make sense of it.

But it seems the old Ford Motor Company motto is alive and well all over the place and everybody has "a better idea".

I'm able to login for the forums, but not to the News site. Tried checking my subscription information and the website said that it cannot find my accout even though my subscription is good to Dec 2017. Guessing that there may be a problem with the subriber database.

I'm In the same boat: forums (or for the classically educated fora) OK, Newswire not OK. Foreign address as well, just to confuse the US/Canda centric nature of the upgrade.

Though none of this is quite as impressive as the nameless conservation charity whose upgrade asked for dates of birth but only allowed 1-30 in the day field.

We are aware of an issue and are working to resolve it. People who are experiencing a problem shoud post their operating system, web browser, and version to help in diagnosing it. Thank you.

  Count me in on this...

Login has become problematic. Signed in to the FORUM, but Newswire function refuses to recognize a current TRAINS subscription holder.  The sign in screen is in a totally different style than its appearance in the past.

Next it asks for all Customer address info, and a subscription number(?) The reasks same infor for 'gifts' and other extras requested (in past?).

Seems we have been 'wrecked' once more by another Forum' Enhancement' .  These 'issues' are becoming what appears to be the I.S. people making solutions for problems to make work for themselves, rather than enhancing the experience for the Customers....

AGAIN.. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T "FIX' IT!  Bang Head

I ran into the Newswire issue yesterday. I was logged in, and my MR extra's still worked. Just the Newswire access was a problem. I logged out, killed/restarted the browser, and logged back in - Presto, it was working...

After posting, I picked up my GS5 smartphone - same problem as I had yesterday with the laptop. Logout, restart, and login to get to the Newswire function.

Guess trains IT did some more tweeking.  If you go to the main page of news wire you will find that it no longer lists how many replies to each of the storys.  Click on the story it does show how many replies.

And in the process they've managed to make the site run slower. Sad

I too, was locked out of Newswire even though I have two valid subscriptions.  It even said "welcome back..."  When  I tried to log-in, I got a blank window to "fill-in."  I gave up and re-booted my laptop.  I can read it now.

Earlier last week, when I first had to log in, I only had to determine just what information was requested. Yesterday, I had to log in to repsond to another post--and at first it would not let me enter the required information, but it did relent and allow me to enter the information.

Ever since the last "upgrade" I've been having problems on my lap top.  The view was a bit distorted at times and it wouldn't let me quote other posts.  Sometimes I couldn't reply at all and when I could, some of the tools weren't available.

I seemed to have solved the problem.  After an upgrade or two previous, I had to start viewing with using the compatability mode.  I checked to see if it was still enabled and it was.  So I turned it off and now everything seems to be back to normal.

Jeff: Just my two cents, but this software had to be coded in basic back in the eighties. It is that far behind the rest of the world. Another thing I've noticed is that Trains server is very slow to respond. Perhaps it is time for Kalmbach to upgrade both. If I can find out who to send an email saying they need some upgrades, I will. Oh; and they do need to hire some IT folks who have a clue what they are doing.

The only issue I've noticed recently is being logged out due to some event, probably on the Kalmbach server side. If the IT folks are upgrading software without notifying us, well, that's more of the (non)professionalism that we've come to expect.

As far as asking them to upgrade software or hardware, dream on as this forum service is Free.

One thing you should do (if you haven't already) is stop using Internet Explorer; Microsoft has made it clear that their Edge browser is where they are investing development time. Install and use one of the better alternatives like Chrome, Firefox, or Opera.
