Trains Forum- Perceived irritations and issues

Copied from another Thread here..linked @ http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/253974.aspx

A partial post by dakotafred  on topic  " If KCS onis such a great catch..."

FTT:"...On another subject: The reason I didn't just copy Dakguy's post is that for the past two days I haven't been able to move another's copy within my own post for the sake of editing. Anyone else with this problem?.."

My problem seems to reside in the icon for linking items into the Threads..I am able to get the link highlighted in the 'comments' area, but when it appears in the Thread discussion topic area of the Thread, the link is not 'live'.. I notced this issue within the last week Bang Head

I don't have that problem, but something that does irritate me is that when I try to put an emoticon at the end of a post, it ends up at the beginning.

Edit>  It usually shows up at the beginning of my post.  In this case it jumped up in front of the quoted part as well.  It makes it  like I'm calling Sam a dummy.  If I don't pay attention, I'll be off Sam's Christmas card list and not know why.

Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.

Norris, some times when I have my cursor at the desirted spot in a post the emoticon comes in at the beginning of my comment--and at other times it arrives where I want it and I do not have to move it. Is Kalmbach using a "bargain" system?

I've never noticed a problem with the emoticons.

I have had problems with links, especially if I try to hyperlink a word or phrase.  Sometimes I end up with a jumble that includes the desired URL, plus everything around it.

Fortunately, I'm conversant in HTML (the source code) and have often been able to go to the source code and fix the problem that way.   I also often code my replies with "forum code" - tags, etc., which can help me sort through issues.

Sigh I've had the emoticon issue, they end up placing wherever they feel like at times..... Like this post for instance. It should appear after all text, but.....

I moved it within your quote...

It's possible folks are moving their cursor without realizing it...

Stick out tongueAfter I finish typing this, I am going to put the cursor betweenthe two arrow heads below:

------>Big Smile<------

And insert the smiley icon.

That worked, now I will just finish this sentence and without moving the cursor just insert another smelly icon.

Oops!... it appears before the 1st paragraph. (yes, I could manually move it, but the idea is that it should appear where the cursor was at  the moment.

The Trains forum software has been flakey since I joined and gets flakeyer with every 'fix' Kalmbach IT attempts to apply to it.  Reinventing the wheel doesn't always end up being round and rolling.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

No problem with placement of icons here ....Big Smile....Smile, Wink & Grin

OTOH, the link feature occasionally goes wacko. Without using the editor 'insert link' feature, typing a standalone URL with a trailing space usually results in an active link. When the link isn't activated at initial post it is almost impossible to make it work thereafter. Typing this test link: http://cs.trains.com

Getting back to the icon issue. Just a swag, but it could be related to which browser you are using. Some are twitchier or less standards compliant than others. Firefox has worked well for me on most websites.

Here is a puzzle to me: once in a while, I will receive, in my email, a post that I cannot find when I go to the forum it was posted on.

Deggesty

Here is a puzzle to me: once in a while, I will receive, in my email, a post that I cannot find when I go to the forum it was posted on.

I have had the same thing happen, but i have been able to figure out two different things that I think caused at least some of them...

1) the post was obscene in some way and was deleted before I got to the thread.

2) the post was the 1st one on a high number page of the thread and going to the thread using either the link in the e-mail or the "last page" link in the forum main page took me to the last post on the 2nd-to-last page.  I couldn't get to the 1st post on the next (last) page until someone else posted to that thread, then the 2 postings showed up correctly using any method of getting to the last page of the thread.

I figure the problem is assoicated with those threads where the page count goes wonky and some pages show a -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ... page count of links at the bottom of the page.
