For those going to Switzerland ...
Posted by Mario_v on Friday, January 8, 2016 1:11 PM

Hello all ;

For any one of you going to Switzerland after June 1 this year and using the 'Gothardbahn', here's something that one will stop seeing as soon as the tunnel opens ; in a word, big and heavy (for european standards) freight trains with as mucch as 23,000 horsepower (it's possible to see some 'locotrolized' trains with a 2 by 1 combination) assaulting the brutal 2.7% grades. This is high  intensity railroad at its best and all the healthy head end power is needed to keep the line fluid (with the european type couplers maximum load is limited to 2000 metric tones, in good weather conditions), with all trains moving at about the same speed, wich is in the vicinity of 75 to 80 Km/h (47 to 50 Mph), limited by curvature. This one is also 100% classic local power, so enjoy it
