Kansas City a close second???
Posted by Kozzie on Sunday, November 21, 2004 6:43 PM
After browsing through back issues of Trains Mag on the weekend, one map that stood out was one showing all the main routes across the U.S. In particualr I noticed the number of lines that converge on Chicago. Whilst checking out this map again, it also struck me that a quite a few lines also converge on Kansas City as well. Could Kansas City be regarded as a close second to Chicago for number of various lines leading to a city? It's geographical position probably lends a a reasonable amount to this.?.. Or is there another city that pips KC? [;)][:)]

If Kansas City isn't number two,it is number three right behind St Louis, which also has many rail lines, and until recently, many different railroads, running into it.

Mark, I certainly didn't want to get bogged down in a meaningless exercise. I was just using the map in the magazine as a reference point for the question. What you said in the last two paragraphs is along the lines of what I was thinking. (Coal haulage must be massive.)

KC is a hub for quite a few things... A lot of airlines station many of their crew members there, and trucking/delivery companies also use that area as a hub. Isn't FedX's main hub there? I would guess it is ranking pretty high as far as RR hubs go too. Who knows, maybe someday it will be number one.

Mark,
On a related topic, any information on how the new Santa Fe Junction Flyover preforming as to fewer delays thru that busy rail corridor? I visited the site during construction. Look forward to seeing this in action. Be a good follow-up article for the Trains.
