My favortie yard, Bensenville yard (old MILW) is still active, however I was very disappointed at the demolition of the Diesel House on the west side of the yard. I was also sad to see the UP facilities were torn down in Omaha to make way for that monstrosity called the Qwest Center. But at least the old C&NW facilities are still up in Council Bluffs taking care of UP's Heritage fleet.

The Saint Clair Yards of the Reading Railroad in Pottsville Pennsylvania, told in my youth was the largest consolidation yard in the world in the 1920's. Famous author John O'Hara worked on a switch engine there in his early 20's collecting thoughts for his writings. Also my home town of Tamaqua, also on the Reading, the whole center of town, engine house, coaling facilities, shops.

I would love to see blueprint of the old Dewitt yards. (Pre-1965) I think 1950-53 would be best. It would still show Engine terminal at the west end of the yards, and the two humps in operation. 1956-57 would'nt be bad either. It would show the remains of Steam terminal , and new Diesel house at the mid- point of the yard.

One long-vanished yard that even most of us locals have forgotten was IC's Congress Street Yard right in downtown Chicago in the trench just east of Michigan Ave.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Espee's Lower Dunsmuir yard at Nutglade and the Machine Shop and 24 stall Roundhouse at Upper Dunsmuir yard.

Even though I was too young to railfan the GB&W before it was bought out, I would have to say that Norwood Yard would be the yard I miss the most. Some of the track is still there but it's mostly used for storage (if I am correct), all of the building (engine house, etc.) have been torn down except for the Yard Office (which is empty).
I love the smell of ALCo smoke in the Morning. "Long live the 251!!!" I miss the GBW and my favorite uncle is Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete eats Space Noodles for breakfast.

My Favorite subdivison is does that count Arcola Subdivison on the Manitoba District my hometown track has been tore up around 6 week to 8 weeks ago
by cando enterprises out of Brandon Manitoba yep it sucks
but we still get trains but just one way grain trains

The 'ol Bloom Branch of the DL&W in NEPA - Kingston Yard and would you believe the roundhouse still stands today! Went into the USAF in the 60's and returned in 70's, yard was gone, but roundhouse was there.... also missed getting pics of the freight and passenger stations.... you always say to yourself, tomorrow..... fire got there before I did!

My favorite yard was, The New York Central yard in North Bergen,N.J. Its been gone since the 60's. My uncle worked the yard, was an enginer and when I was young he used to give me a ride on the switcher, an NW-2 NYC. But those days are long gone.

DeWitt NY Yard during the mid 70's to early 80's, when my grandparents would take me off of my parents hands and take me to the yard to watch the 'hump' in action. I think CSX did some revamping of it over the past summer. Does not look like as much track there now as there used to be when I was a kid.

Norwood Yard in Green Bay on the former Green Bay & Western. At least I can still see some of the old Alco's still in action on the Minnesota Commercial here in the Twin Cities.

Fortunately, my favorite yard, has enjoyed a comeback. Enola Yard was virtually shut down in the early 1990's, as it was a redundant operation for Conrail, as Conrail had yards in New Jersey, Allentown, Pa, and Conway, Pa, to name a few. Norfolk Southern revitalized the yard and reactivated hump activity. Before the reactivation of the hump, flatswitching was perhaps 125 cars per day. NS' goal in reactivating the hump was to bring classification up to 1200-1500 cars per day. From watching the operation from a hotel window across from the yards whenever I visit the area, they have gotten close to that goal. NS classifies North-South Traffic as well as East-West at Enola. The township is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Enola Yard this year. It is good to see revitilization of these railroad landmarks. Yes, yes, yes! My favorite place to watch commuter trains though not much freight. Ages ago when I was a little kid my dad would drive us past there. The 1960s looked alot different.

The Decoursy Yards are still there. CSX owns it, and it's still in partial operation (though the majority of it is abandoned).
