A recent bio/obiturary of David Read seems to have him working for the SP as a "telegrapher" at age of 13 or 14, his assuming that job in 1949, and being 79 years old at deeath shortly after Easter.
Was he 79 at death or older?
Or, since his first job was as a Western Union messanger, was his first telegraphy job also with Western Union?
Thanks for anjy anjswers.
He was born in December 1935 and so was in fact 79 when passing on. Some other questions are answered in the July izzue of CLASSIC TRAINS
Dave: 1935 would put it in the middle of the "Great Depression'(?) It was a time when age was to be 'gerrymandered' to assist older 'children' who did not resemble their chronological age, but of someone much older; to be able to provide work to help their family with that needed extra income....Recall the stories of underaged 'boys' who enlisted in various Services to fight for the US when they were nowhere near the chronological age to be able to enlist legitimately...
Just my thoughts on David Read...
