Jusst as a heads up, since release is going to be considerably in the future, Stephen Low is starting work on an IMAX film in cooperation with BNSF. Expect an impressive result, professionally done by somebody who is very knowledgeable about railroads. It won't be your standard railfan video, nor a Hollywood distortion. Some of you may have seen his Rocky Mountain Express, featuring CPR 2816.

The promo shows the SF steam engine. I can only hope that it might be included in the movie.
That will most likely be filmed or recorded in the Rocky Mountains.
There is a new Digital IMAX camera coming out soon.
This movie could be film or it could be digital.

This project has "good genes", as the saying goes.
Some might remember BN's similar 1973 "Portrait of a Railroad" (about 27 minutes), which was mostly about as good as could be expected at the time (EDITED: except for at the end, when there was a guy in silhouette signaling a 'highball' with a fusee while walking through a yard, for no purpose that I can discern other than some dramatic video footage). Here are the links to what are supposed to be the 3 segments of it:

I'd forgotten what fun it was to watch this little video - surprising that it was even made at all back in those 'dark ages". I recommend it highly.

I first saw that film at the Spokane World's Fair ('74, wasn't it?). Loved it then and was delighted when it showed up on Youtube a few years back.
I thought that bit at the end was so cool back then--maybe it looks a little staged and excessively "atmospheric" these days. I still love that closing scene under the credits as you hear the wheels of the departing train and then the very faint horn in the distance.
Surely one of the best things ever to come out of a railroad PR department.
Portrait of A Railroad deserves its own thread on this Forum. I'll post one in a few minutes.
