I'm working on the next installment of my Rail Photo Tips and hope to have it posted by this weekend (although I may split this one in twain as it's getting longish). In the meantime, I thought I'd share a pair of photos that are quite different from each other. First up is a B&W of the window washers for the CZ taken at Union Station during the Zephyr's station stop:

And now, for something completely different! Here's a shot taken shortly after sunrise up at Blue Mountain Road on the Moffat Sub. I believe this is the M-NYRO?

The B&W shot reinforces the oft-made point that there is a human side to railroading to. Nicely done.
The second shot certainly conveys power and speed well, but the tonality is all over the place - soft, sharp, in between. Not sure what I think of it.

Part of that is part of what drove me to shoot and to process it. There's something about that effect that says "morning" to me, I guess. I also white balanced for the shadows instead of the highlights. That left the highlights very warm, which I liked.
I like both of them. The window washers wouldn't look much different in color. I also liked the kind of 'mirror-image' effect - they're back-to-back, though not quite identical. (I also want to ask if they waved, or deliberately stepped in front of that car, or if they otherwise ruined your shot [a la Glischinski], but that would be too facetious, and you don't deserve to have your photos subjected to or associated with that sort of sarcasm.)
I liked the UP shot mainly because of the sharp curve, and also the smorgasboard of colors, shapes, lines, and textures. In theory, I suppose it shouldn't work for that reason; but in actuality it does, very nicely.

I really like the lighting on the UP train. The backlit effect works well for me.
