High Brake Wheel Boxcar

I would assume that the brakewheel was lowered about the same time as Westinghouse air brakes started to come into widespread use. <br /> <br />It was no longer necessary for brakemen to go from roof to roof to set brakes in order to stop the train. <br /> <br />I am not sure about the AAR rules but chances are if the high brake wheel is still there the car can still be used on the shortline, it just might not be able to go through interchange. <br /> <br />Hope that helps a little.
