In Singapore, property damage is punished ruthlessly: Two German sprayers threatened by defacing a subway corporal punishment.

For two young men from Leipzig, who are accused in Singapore of vandalism, there is hardly a way to escape the mandatory corporal punishment for this offense. As their lawyer Christopher Bridges reported on Monday, the two Germans want to plead guilty in court. They were arrested in November during a holiday in Singapore in a depot with metro (subway) cars in the district Bishan. There they had sprayed some of them with graffiti.

A verdict is expected on 5 March. According to the law could be lenient to first offenders, if the paintings were made with washable paint like pencil or chalk. But the two had used according to press reports insoluble spray paint.
Some compare human corporal punishment, which is performed with a rattan stick, which is more than 1.27 inches thick in diameter, with torture. The government denies this, however. According to the Ministry of Justice in the city-state of this type of punishment is not also arranged lightly. The canings are performed under medical supervision on the bare buttocks, leaving serious injuries are slow to heal and leave visible scars. The penalty has its origins in the British colonial period, and is also used in neighboring countries Malaysia and Brunei.
They are sitting in custody since November. They could not or did not have the required security deposit of 100,000 Singapore dollars (about 65,000 euros) apply. The number of counts was shut traded in extrajudicial negotiations from four to three points. In addition to the vandalism, prosecution accuses them before the trespassing of land in two cases. The maximum penalty for this is 1000 Singapore dollars (650 euros), up to two years imprisonment or both.
Vandalism is punishable by three to eight strokes of the cane and a fine of 2,000 Singapore dollars (1300 euros) or up to three years in prison. However, the maximum penalty is rarely imposed.
The imposition of corporal punishment also for foreigners had caused a stir in 1994 when Michael Fay, a 18 year old teenager from America, was punished with four strokes of the cane because he had scratched parked cars and stolen street signs. In 2010, a court sentenced a then 31-year-old Swiss to five months in jail and three strokes of the cane. The Swiss had also entered into a subway station and had sprayed graffiti on two cars.

And should be done in public. Just to make the humiliation complete.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
What if they like spanking?
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
As I recall, there was an American kid who got the same business in Singapore back in the '90s. I'm sure he could have given those German kids a real sales talk on why you shouldn't go "tagging" in Singapore.

But, then, I wonder if these miscreants appreciate the penalty they incurred through their selfish idiocy.

When I was a kid and was being baby sat by my grandmother; if we did something wrong she sent us to get our own switch to which she would spank us with. We learned very quickly how to pick a switch that would past the test for the purpose of spanking but would also hurt the least. LOL
In today's society people would freak out over that and scream child abuse and would want to throw my grandmother in jail. LOL The world has sure changed a lot in the short 37 years I've been around.
Here in the WA state the penalty would most likely be a misdemeanor with the max penalty of 90 days in jail and $1000 fine. There is about a 99% chance that the individuals would not do any jail time and would pay a small fine. Hold these kids in jail since November just to spank them seems a bit over the top. If they want to plead guilty then let them, spank them and then ship them off back to Germany. Looks like Singapore is craving some attention and is trying to send another world-wide message like they did with the US kid back in the 90's.

Then there was the union boss's kid who misbehaved...
When his mother said "Go to the closet and get me a switch!" the kid replied "Forget it lady, that's the electrician's job!"
