Interesting article on various concerns transporting crude.  Article describes chemicals, bacteria , and other problems some problems in pipe lines as well and some only in RR tank cars due to lack of movement especially when storing before or after shipping.

Unless the sludge is cleaned out of tank cars after emptying, the bacteria will continue to do harm even even when empty.  I can't imagine why a tank car wouldn't be lined.

I had to replace my home heating fuel oil tank a few years ago - organisms in the fuel ate through the tank.  Remember, crude and it''s refined products are working with the remains of a dead organism with potentials to reach all the virus and bacteria that were in the environment of the organism when it was alive.
