Matt, I don’t know what to conclude about the answer to the question other than there is much about railroading that only an insider would know.  But measuring the collective public knowledge of railroading strikes me as a question that could only be answered by surveying the public with a series of targeted questions.  A survey of railfans on the question is guaranteed to indicate that the public knows almost nothing about railroads, even if that is not the case.
