Some say high speed trains will compete with the airlines. Yes, up to a point, but the real competition is with our automobiles and the speed of busses. If Amtrak can build high speed rail and trains that can go 150-186 mph, people will leave their cars behind. We can build a 5,000 mile high speed rail network east of the Rockies for less than building 5,000 miles of more interstates. We could save a lot of money using the middle median of most interstates by not buying new real estate right of way. When we reach a major city the rail network could divert to the old tracks, although these tracks should be improved to reach their depots and stations. Once people realize that the high speed trains leave them in their cars IN THE DUST along I-55, or I-44, or I-20, it won't be long before they ride the fast trains.
