JJohnieray, that was train 156.  It originates in Roanoke.  Left on time at 8:40 AM EST.  Noted it had a private dome car on the rear.

It'll probably get taken care of at Eola Yard in Aurora.

It is as foggy as I have ever seen it at 0705 CST.

I'm not sure what Tree or the other meterological types on the forum might think, but I am putting visability at about 2 to 2.5 autoracks past the diamond.

Well, that's probably the most unique way to measure visibility I've ever encountered...

Just tried opening the webcam. I get the miles and the text at the bottom, but just a black screen. Did someone leave the lens cap on? I'm using Safari on an older MacBook Pro, OS 9.5.3. Has been OK, though the refresh arrow stopped working months ago (have to reload). But what's with the black screen? /Mr Lynn

Except when it's down I've not had a problem viewing it in Firefox.

That may be related to the signal break-up I'm seeing this morning.  It's OK until I go to full screen but then I see black strips across the image that jump around.  Each "strip" only lasts for a fraction of a second but it seems to be continuous.  Probably atmospherics.

That looks like quite a party at the fire pit now--a fire has been started, and it lokks as though the threee are going to cook a meal.

I hope Rochelle does not have an anti-woodburning ordinance.

Thanks again, Semper, for your tips on getting back to IE-11.   The cam is working fine, and I got back a couple of features that were lost with Edge, like double-click to toggle into and out of full screen.

Looks like the local is still fighting with the switch .. Not listening to the dispatch feed, but looked like lively discussion.

Larry, that's just one of the ways we used to gauge it on our little bump-at-the-center-of-the-world.  The other was was which switches we could see down the hill to.  When the Tower A operator couldn't see his own switches outside, it was curtains.  At night we'd put lighted fusees on the trailing end of the cars to see if we could track them past a known point.  Then we could release the next car in that direction.

Sorry for the late response to this. They didn't have have problems with the switch, the DS told them to close up behind them becase he needed track 2 to run trains; usually they they leave it open until they finish their work and return which typically takes 15 - 30 minutes. After they finished their work the stopped clear of the switch and a trainman walked to the switch. He waited until two westbounds passed then opened the switch so they could proceed east.

Just saw a WB intermodal on BNSF with mostly UPS boxes clear the diamonds at 1319 CST. He had just met an EB with roughly the same consist.

This got me to thinking, has anyone ever seen a number on how many tons of "stuff" are on US or NA rails on a typical day? Not counting the tare weights of the cars and loco's.

Good thing we havw skilled MOW forces to keep the whole thing from sinking into the ground.

Somewhere between the AAR and the Department of Commerce, someone keeps such statistics.

Thanks for that tip.

I looked at the AAR webpage, and the way they phrase it is, "each day railroads deliver 5 million tons of goods."

So, I guess now I know.

So, 5 million tons out each day must mean five million tons in, but that wouldn't account for the weight of goods in transit.

Looks like it is back to the drawing board.
