Jeff, You bring up some very interesting thoughts.  I have no idea how those AC systems are designed, but I know I find a lot of issues with commercial AC intallations.  I wonder how much CO is produced by the locomotives.  As I understand, the outdoor temperature was very high at the time of the collision, so AC would have been much needed.
