The FRA is developing systems to couple and uncouple freight cars by remote control, so I don't believe anything is out of the question. <a href="http://www.fra.dot.gov/downloads/research/rr0829.pdf">http://www.fra.dot.gov/downloads/research/rr0829.pdf</a> I think fully automated trains are a long way off, but taking the engineer out of the locomotive and putting him in an office is coming soon.
