[quote user="zugmann"] Bottom line:  either mode is better depending on the conditions and variables you put in place.  So these "race" ideas are useless.  Take the train or the plane (or a donkey leading a hound)....it's having that choice that is the winner.   [/quote] Depends on your perspective.  Putting together the information for a hypothetical race forces one to check out the facts.  It is amazing how many people think that they know about a transport market only to be proven wrong when the facts are presented.  And it is fun.  Of course, one can rig the outcome by changing the variables.  The choice would be a winner if both competitors were required to survive without direct government subsidies.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.
