Can someone here please tell me were the Yard is in Salem OR and Sacramento CA?

Both places are state capitals but i cant find refences to a existing railroad yard or set off siding in either of those towns. Can someone here tell me please?

Sacramento had an SP yard next to the station/shops, now closed, but I believe you are looking for Roseville, which is several miles northeast (on the line through Donner Pass)

The yards in Sacramento are the old SP Locomotive Works In downtown Sac. and I-5, Also there is the big hump yard in Roseville. Thats about 15 to 20 mi. east on I-80. [:D] I'm totally unsure about a yard in Salem Or. but there is the old SP Brooklyn yard in the southeast area of Portland called Milwauke. ( yes its only one e ) Thats where Doyle McCormack keeps his locos and the SP 4449. Hope that helps.[:D][8D]

Sacramento doesn't have any major yards The Sacramento Locomotive Works (major shops is is being torn down and is mostly gone. It is just north of the Calif State Railroad Museum. Some of the buildings and track are used to store museum owned equipment but the area is not open to the public. The SP railroad station (still used by Amtrak) is only a few blocks from the museum.

The WP yard and shops are gone.

There are a few areas used for sorting cars in the vicinity of the industrial areas and old military bases east of town along the SP main line to points south and northeast along the main to Roseville.

Stay out of the yard, they are running remote control switchers, and the SP police are on the look out for trespassers.

As drailed1999 said the major yard in the area is about 20 miles NE in the Roseville Area. The hump yard (Antelope) is nor very accessable, but most of the eastern portion and Y are in Roseville and most of it can be viewed from City streets.

Okay so there is no real yard in Sacramento so howabout a major on line industry that gets switched daily on the SP main. And still need info for Salem OR

Has anyone noticed that there looks to be a BNSF local, usually powered by two late GE 4 axle units, that is parked at the tracks by McClelland. Are they inroute to stockton, or do they have trackage rights to industries in the area.

If you are in the area while there are no major online industries in Sacramento, Woodland which is about 15 miles NW on I-5 is a town with a lot of shortline action. It is served by two shortlines, one of which, California Northern, interchanges with UP in Davis. There is one pick-up which usually requires 2 GP15s and return that rates the occasional sd-40. It also keeps the Davis area hopping as Amtrak california makes a stop there on two tracks one eastbound and one westbound that requires UP's freights to hold until the platform is clear.

The California Northern is the old Southern Pacific west valley line to Tehama where it and the east valley line joined and continued Redding and points north.

The other RR in Woodland is the Yolo Shortline. It in addition to freight it has a tourist operation http://www.sacramentorivertrain.com/ It is the former Sacramento Northern Woodland Branch. It interchanges with the UP in West Sacramento. Outside of Davis, Woodland, and Roseville what action there is, is in West Sacramento near the river south of West Capitol Avenue and in the nearby Port of Sacramento west of Jefferson Boulevard.

In Woodland there is no connection between the California Northern and the Yolo Shortline even though the end of the Yolo on the north side of Main Street, is only a few hundred feet across East Street from the California Northern.

At one time Sacramento Northern continued west on Main Street into downtown Woodland. About five blocks west of East Street (and the California Northern line) on the south side of Main Street is the Sacramento Northern station. It is not the original station, but the building was built using the blueprints for the original station;

Technically there is another RR in West Sac the Port Belt which serves the port, but it does not own any equipment and contracts operations with the UP and mabe the Yolo. It used to be served in alternate years by the SP and the SN.

The BNSF units that were at McClellend AFB are from Yolo Shortline. They're also GP-7's

There were the low nose GP-7s there but also two 8-40Bs in the green and orange paint scheme. They are usually there on Monday mornings. They are attached to a train of about 15-30 cars.
Was the WP GP-18 that the YSL was working on ever finished?

It is? All the maps I have show it spelled "Milwaukie." And that's the correct spelling. And my strong impression is that it was called Brooklyn Yard because it's in the Brooklyn section of Portland. Milwaukie is further to the south.

Salem had no yards for either the SP&S or the SP.

Is it part of the "Run a locomotive program" or a static display? Who is Sierra railway?
