GT&W used to go through my hometown, does it evn exist at all anywhere?

My hometown, too.

It was the Grand Trunk Western (no ampersand).
This railroad has always (under the GTW name) been affiliated with the Canadian National. If your hometown is in Indiana, the track still goes through there, but it's called the CN nowadays. You'll still find a lot of freight cars lettered GTW, though...they're being repainted, but not relettered.

It was still the GTW when they pulled up the rails on the line serving my hometown [sigh].

yeah i am in indiana and the locomotives are cn with some gtw cars and very rarley the blue GTW locomotive

GTW and IC will probably fade into paper railroads into the near future as CN exerts operating control more directly than in the past. Their continued legal existence will be due to the requirements of operating in more than one country.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

GTW was the CN division which operated in the US west and south of the Detroit/Windsor gateway. Grand Trunk was the similar division which operated the lines in the US in New England (principally the Central Vermont). Both were created when the restrictions and paperwork on Canadian firms operating in the US were a lot more difficult (we used to have to make sure the CN FPA4's and the like got back into Canada within... I think it was 48 hours... so we didn't get hit with a US Customs duty on them). Times have changed, and they aren't needed so much -- but as CSSHEGEWISCH says (hey guy, don't you have a shorter handle?!) they will still exist on paper, probably forever.

Noticed a GTW locomotive at Markham today while passing overhead on the Tri State. Also working was a pair of IC black switchers.

The flags may have fallen, but are not all put away quite yet.
