Just got it in the mail today. Great issue! Thats all I gotta say at the moment as I dont want to spoil the fun/excitement for those who have yet to get it.

Speaking of Trains, can you buy back issues?

I haven't got mine either yet. Should come the first, well this month it'll be the second, as the first is a Sunday, as it always comes on the first dilviery day in the month, without fail.

Nor here. I saw the new issue of Classic Trains at the hobby shop a couple of days ago (they were out of them today!), and expect that my copies of Trains, Classic Trains, and {i]Model Railroader[/i] will all hit on the same day. I hope it's not tomorrow...I'd rather wait until Monday when I'm on vacation and can dig right in to them!

P.S. I know my little sister is probably anxious to see the September issue, too, given the cover girl...I mean, boy. She'll probably get hers by the time she reports back Monday.

Today I join with some others and now have the Sept. issue of TRAINS...and it looks to be a good one with the extensive steam info and even some passenger stuff...Just have had a quick look so far. Earliest I've received my copy in many months.

Got mine Sat along with Classic Trains. Immediately took them upstairs and took a nap with them!

But then took them train watching on Sunday, too. Didn't get to either of them - too much activity trackside.

Just got mine today (5th), a little bit mangled by the USPS.

The Bob Johnston article about California Amtrak service is interesting...I've ridden various segments several times, most recently the Surfliner to San Diego on July 24th.

They aren't kidding when they say the trains are popular...this particular one was full of race fans headed to Del Mar (near Solana Beach station). I had to stand near the door from Anaheim down to Solana Beach, as every seat was taken and there were a lot of people in the aisles and on the steps too.

The train was so full they did not permit many to board at either Irvine or San Juan Capistrano. Many people on the platforms with tickets had to wait 90 minutes for the next train...

At last a real business historian shows his metal. Ed King's article on "Big Boy or Big Mistake" is the first article I have read in Trains that similar to the work and influence of Dr. Albro Martin's book Railroads Triumphant.. His reflections on the vainity of rail executives that were more interested in the illusion of speed over the necessity of profits and the inverse reality attitude shown by The Norfolk and Western is intructive and refreshing. I short we may be witnessing the birth of a balanced history of this vital American Forse we all love called the American Railroad Industry. My compliments to the witness to the SAL and the Midline from a grandson of Athens for his work in this issue of Trains.

I finally got mine today as well, so far have just had time to flip through it...

The map of the month this time is abandonments in Iowa, does anyone know if there has ever been a similar map for Colorado?

Not too far from my house you can see some of the Iowa abandonments. Piles of ties and dirt seem to pop up more and more everyday.

I don't recall ever seeing a map in this theme before. The SPV atlases are helpful in tracking this info...

Me too. "Prariries East and Ozarks" (IA, MO, AR) just came out a few weeks ago. I don't know the scheduled release date for "Minnesota and the Dakotas"...

The SPV atlases are an outstanding resource. Not perfect, but close enough that you really have to know the subject area to find the discrepancies. I just wi***he last two for the U.S. would appear, and then Canada, and Mexico, and the rest of the world too.

I really miss David P. Morgan. I always enjoyed his stories,especially from
