Southern 4610

I saw the repainted Southern 4610 rolling down the track today. Heading east to Lambert's Point on the Ex-Virginian line. That green paint still looks pretty glossly for being on a coal train.

Do you mean 4610? That, as I understand it, is a Southern locomotive that NS has recently repainted (still in its old colors). I've never seen it, but here is a link to a picture of it....

the only 2610 on the ns right now is a new sd70.

Yeah, the 2610 is an SD70M. The 4610 is a GP59[;)]

Ahhh stupid me. [#oops] I did mean 4610. I clearly have written in my notes " SOU 4610 - 5:58 Dogwood." I dont have a clue what made me use a "2" instead of a "4". Those mesquites must have took much blood the other night.

You just had us Canadians totally confused - the only Southern up here is Southern Railway of BC - they don't have a 2610 or 4610 . Thanks for putting things straight.

Yea sorry about that, but it's all a learning experience. I've learned more about Canada and Canadians from this forum than from having a teacher from Canada. Always been interested with my neighbors to the north.

Go to Railpictures.net and search under "Kentucky" and you will see all the photos taken of the Southern 4610 in Lawrenceburg and in the Louisville area over the last 2 or 3 months.

I have yet to see the thing (the 4610), I've heard its only been in the northeast once, not 100% sure if its true, I wish NS would do N&W and CR engines, NS did have the 2943 (Sprit of Conrail GP38) but its on the dead line in Enola.

Southern never even owned GP59's, or any other low nose loco for that matter but I think it looks great.

The last Southern diesels delivered in the "tuxedo" SR paint scheme were:

1. GE-the B30-7A1( A1=high capacity extended range dynamic braking) 3500-3521 5/82

2. EMD-road unit- GP50 7073-7092 5/81

3. EMD-switcher- MP15 2430-2435 5/82

Both the B30-7A1's and the GP50's had high short hoods, as did all SR road units. The SR even went so far as adding high hoods to low hood locomotives it acquired in mergers or acquisitions, i.e. the original Norfolk Southern GP 18's and GP 38's.

All locomotives went to the new Norfolk Southern on 6/1/82. Low hood units were delivered to NS with SOU sublettering but none of these were original SR "tuxedo" painted units. The 4610 is the only low hood unit to wear a variant of the SR "tuxedo" scheme, however it was delivered well into the NS era.
