Indiana Northeastern?

Matt and decided to check on the old Wabash Line in Montpelier Ohio.Saw some ns stuff but saw 2 units with " Indiana Northeastern" on them.Is this a new shorline or is it out of buissness?we also got switcher 223 at the elevator too.thanks for any help.

This is the former Hillsdale County RR. Been a short line up there for a long time.

Hillsdale County, but had not heard of the other.

Hey Joe, with you being a buckeye and all, maybe you can answer this.

Between Toledo and Montpelier I have shown on a map "Wabash Cannonballl Trail"

What's up with that? is it a former alignment of the line that now goes through Adrian MI

This is the former Wabash main between Montpelier and Toledo, via Delta, Wauseon, etc. It was abandoned, IIRC, sometime in the late eighties or early nineties. Between Delta and Montpelier, there used to be quite an interchange business with the DT&I in autoparts but that interchange was moved to Detroit. It's now a bike and hiking trail but I don't know how long it is.

Do you know when the "alt" route was built? or, more specifically when did the line to toledo cease being the "main" to Detroit? (or were there simply two "mains", one to Detroit and one to Toledo?

For some reason I've always thought of Detroit as a destination of the "cannonball"

I'm not exactly sure without looking it up but the Wabash was built in pieces, the line via Adrian is not a alternative line. The line through Ft. Wayne once went to Toledo from Peru, the connection between New Haven and Butler, IN was constructed and opened in about 1901. Prior to this, Logansport was where the lines divided, the Wabash main to Detroit went via Columbia City, Churubusco, on up to Butler. This was sold off to the Vandalia (PRR) after the connection to Butler was built. Lots of this roadbed is still very visible if you drive St. Route 205 from Columbia City to Coldwater Road, or whatever Coldwater becomes when it gets near Garrett.

Detroit was the destination of the Cannonball, I guess that it just flows together, "Wabash Cannonball Trail".

I guess then the rusted rails crossing Indiana 120 just west of the ohio line were part of this 'columbia city-butler" line?(don't worry, I'm about out of questions) [:I]

The line through Fremont is a separate like from the one I'm thinking of, as the line through Fremont includes a maintained crossing whereas the line I'm speaking of has really been let go and is remote and out in the sticks, nearer to ohio than fremont.

I guess if it isn't waba***hen it's probably some former NYC line...

Hey, thanks for the info you provided it was a big help. That Indiana Northeastern line is still going through Fremont with a working crossing gate across the highway.

I found my handy 1927 railroad atlas, and it seems the line I spotted further east, close to the ohio line, is the old FW & Jackson line between Reading Mich and Angola Ind. (New York Central)

Surprisingly, the rails are still there, rusted and on wildly sun warped ties. Surprised they were neverr pulled up for scrap value.
