Locomotive inspections

How often are locomotives inspected, the type of inspections, where are they done and how long do they usually take?

You need to find the "Locomotive Inspection Act", 49 USC 20701, also 49 CFR 229 and 230. This can be viewed, with much work at www.fra.dot.gov Locomotives must undergo a cursory inspection daily, and a very, very thorough inspection every 92 days, which involves considerable disassembly. There may be others, but it is Uncle that decides.

Thanks Gregg. I am aware of the 92 day inspection which I understand takes about a week or longer. I was wondering about the 1000 mile inspection which I just heard of.

You'll have to check with the FRA on that. The only 1000 mile inspection I am aware of is the air brake inspection, which must be performed every 1000 miles, even if no change is made to the train consist.

That is correct Greg, there is no mileage requirement on inspecting engines, only the train. Also, there are some other inspections for engines, such as the annual inspection (convieniently not exactly 365 days, go figure), air brake inspections (which vary depending on if equipped with electronic air, or the older style), and cab signal inspections. Along with these, there are various oil samples taken and sent to labs (at least on the larger railroads) for analysis in an effort to prevent catastrophic engine or traction motor gear/bearing failure. There are probably a few more inspections depending on the road, but all of these plus the previously mentioned 92day and daily are FRA mandated, except for the oil samle stuff wich falls under preventive maintainance.

Dan: Locomotives are also given a "Running Inspection"before each trip this includes headlights,bell,horn,brakeshoes,mu cabels,air hose,windshield wipers and so forth.This is more of a safety inspection then anything else.It takes about 15-20 mins.for each unit.I have seen this done several times over the years,it is a fun thing to watch.I hope this helps you.
