You are right. The goverment does not have to provide a train service. <br /> <br />Yet, in the constitution, the government does have to provide for post offices and post roads. It would take a constitutional amendment to change this. <br /> <br />Here is the kicker. The government by no means have to provide this service for free. It can and does charge for stamps, tolls on turnpikes, and fares for trains. Not one of these services make a profit. Furthermore, neither do airports. <br /> <br />The question remains, does the public want the service? Does the public want the service for free, or as cheaply as possible to their own pocketbook? <br /> <br />Another kicker. Does the public want to pay some private enterprise to drive their car off of their own driveway? <br /> <br />One can carry private enterprise to the extreme. But most of us like having public roads, airports, buses, and trains......... <br /> <br />
