Red Conrail Caboose?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 15, 2001 7:26 AM
Yesterday (10/14) I took a drive along NS's Allentown Yard. Along with a brand new Amtrak electric locomotive in transit, there was a cornel red bay-window caboose with Conrail markings and logo. Is this the paint scheme for the new Conrail shared asset areas? I was not able to see the road number, but all markings were clearly Conrail.

If the reporting marks are "CR", those initials are assigned to Norfolk Southern. If they are CSAO it would be Conrail Shared Assets Operations. To my knowledge, they (CSAO) rebuilt one PRR caboose underframe into a "Switching platform" and it was painted gray.

I didn't catch the reporting marks, perhaps it will be around tonight when I drive by after work. This caboose was freshly painted in a Cornel red, similar to the color red used on the Lehigh Valley GP38 and the red C628's.

Conrail shared assets did paint a few cabooses in the red scheme, these are for locals and special moves. They look pretty sharp.

Thanks James. They are pretty sharp looking. I saw one last night (10/18) returning to Allentown behind the H78.

Hello Everyone,
I'm Greg from Boston. Cabooses for the shared assets area were provided by NS and CSXT. the former painted their cars red, while the latter painted their cars grey. What you saw is a Shared Assets caboose from NS. They look very good in red. BTW, every 'Genuine' Conrail caboose that I've ever seen has been CR blue. Respectfully, Greg from Boston.
