UP Traffic on Ex-Katy
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 28, 2004 11:04 AM
Does anyone know how much traffic is on the old Katy thru McAlester, OK? I noticed that 3985 was going to Houston again in late May on a route other than the Katy.

Well, I might not be much help on this but looking at an old 1988 UP map I see McAlester, OK is on a direct path from Parsons, KS. I know Parsons has a lot of traffic through there, almost all it exclusively south bound, practically all of it comes out of KC. Combined with branches out of OKC, Tulsa, and possibly Little Rock I'd say McAlester see quite a bit of traffic, though the exact number of trains or tonnage I don't know. I also do know that lots and lots of coal trains go through Parsons, both UP and BNSF.

thanks ironhorseman, I was thinking the Challenger route Coffeeville to Little Rock might be due to heavy traffic on the ex-Katy, which is more direct to Houston.
