Canadian Rockies Trip

Just got back from a Trip from Calgary Alberta West on the CP and then up to Jasper on the CN. One of the most impressive things was the amount of passenger train action. The Rocky Mountaineer runs out one day, back the next so you can see it each day (during peak season). Saw it 3x on CP and once on CN. Saw 2 CP specials. Also saw the Canadian on CN as well as a Price George-Jasper via train. Both CP and CN run enourmously long stack trains (largely 40' steamship boxes on CN) and more of a mix of 40's and larger boxes on CP. Found Morant's curve. Easy to access once you know where to look. Busy times in Alberta and B.C.

If you ever make it back to British Columbia, there is a great camping ground about 40 miles west of Kamploops on the Trans Canada Hwy. It must have been built by a railfan (it would be a disaster for anyone else) because while it is right by the river, on one side the CN mailine passes within 50 ft of the camping area while only several hundred feet across the river up an embankment is the CP Rail mainline. I stayed there in mid August and between 9:00pm and 7:00am over 40 trains went by - split almost evenly between CN and CP.

Hello, I stayed in the campsite you spoke of west of Kamloops a few years back with my dad. I talked him in to driving there from Ashcroft with out telling him why I wanted that campsite. After ariving after dark, we set up our tent(In the spot closest to the tracks it turns out) and went to bed it was barely 5 min before the first train went by and dad knew he was in trouble. We got no sleep that night and I still hear about it now many years later. But I must say I liked that campsite, But next time I will not set my tent up that close to the tracks.
