For all who are looking to become railroad employees:

Dateline Omaha: UP expects to hire about 3,000 people this year, mostly to replace retirees. The railroad would need to hire at least 2,000 people a year over the next 5 years to meet its manpower requirements and because of expected retirements and growth.

121 will be hired in North Platte, NE, 15 at Council Bluffs, IA. Most jobs will be entry-level train workers, including many conductors with pay starting at about $40,000 a year. (wonder if they could use a "Mookie"?)

Other hirings will be spread across the railroad's 22 other states, with concentrations in CA, MN, NV, TX, UT, WY, OR, KS, IL, CO and AR - (which is a lot of people on our forum!)

Training for conductors takes about 4 mos so workers can't immediately move into their jobs. (Darn) Experienced conductors can be promoted to fill train engineer openings -( wonder if my forum experience will count?)

So get your pencils sharpened for the application! [8D]

go for it. after you get qualified then you can toot the horn. ( if the engineer will let you) and in about a year or so you can be the engineer. ( ed will be jelouse then) and make the big money.

Problem with me getting on with the railroad is that I have a relative problem.
Problem is I just don't have any working for the railroad. That seems to be the A number 1 "thing" that gets you on. If you have a relative working for the railroad you have a 1,000,000,000,000,000, % better chance at getting on than someone who doesn't. I know of 5 people who have recently been hired by our Uncle P and everyone of them has relative already working there. Those I know who applied and don't have a relative working there are still waiting for nothing. By the way we have lost another worker from where I work who is going to the rr. He is starting his training classes soon and has given his 2 week notice. And of course he does have relatives working for Pete.

I'll stand up for my little sister and say that it would be the classiest Class I operation around!

Seriously, Sis, I'm not sure I'd want to see you try and get a railroad job. Although I have no doubt that you could carry a knuckle and an air-hose wrench simultaneously to the point where repairs had to be made, I'd hate to see you have to do it.

Your sanity would also be questioned, since you'd be attempting to hire on at an age when railroaders with 30 or more years under their belts are eligible to retire.

Now, if you could move from your office to ours, and become a tracer of lost shipments or something like that[;)], I'd be the first to welcome you with open arms!

Thank you kind relative! I have no doubt I could carry it, it would be getting it off the ground to carry it where I would have trouble.

I would probably not get any work done - I would be so busy watching and asking questions, they would run me off or run over me!

Maybe I should open my own Mookie Ventura, Tracer of Lost Persons/or railroad items!
