Part of it wound up with L&N (now CSX), the remainder wound up with the screaming chicken/MP....Their locomotive shop at Mt. Vernon, IL went to Precision National, now NRE.
Go there now and see "ALCO" ind 10 ft tall giant red letters and large Alco and MLW products in storage behind the fence...

MoPac used an eagle as part of their corporate logo, and also used the eagle as part of the name for their series of prestigious name trains (For example, the Texas Eagle). hence the nickname "screaming hen" or "thunderchick." Now, the Illinois segment that used to be C&EI is now under the ownership of the Armour Yellow Borg, aka U.P.

The C&EI looked like and upside down "Y". The western fork was purchased by the MP and the eastern fork by the L&N. The double track from Woodland Jct to Chicago was jointly owned by the MP & L&N, dispatched by the MP. The C&EI was merged into the MP and is now UP. The L&N is part of CSXT and the double track is still dispatched by the UP and both CSXT and UP trains operate over it.

Look over in the UP & CSX Merger Family Trees under RR History

1963 = Court grants C&EI to MP
1976 = Merged into MP
1982= MP into UP

I suspect that the L&N portion was sold to them as a merger condition. If I remember right, all of C&EI's freight equipment was shown in the equipment registers with MP-system numbers that were intended for it. Later, some of those series were cut back to reflect the cars that went to the L&N instead.

A small sidebar concerning the sale of C&EI's Evansville line to L&N. Monon protested this sale but L&N dealt with the protest by offering to purchase Monon, which was acceptable to all parties, including the ICC.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
