AOE sounds positively delightful, but my long-time dream has been to take the Empire Builder to Portland, Ore., then the Cascades to Vancouver, B.C.

Besides that, I'd give my eye teeth to do one of Alaska Railroad's excursions tied with an Alaskan cruise. (But, frankly, the sensible part of my Wisconsin-frozen mind is wondering why on earth I'd want to go anywhere on earth colder than here!?! Must be the scenery.)

....On a passenger train, I would like to have had a chance to ride many of the winding routes through out southwestern Pennsylvania that many served the soft coal industry. The routes of which many are gone now, wound around the hills including using some horseshoe curves, etc....and at one time DID have passenger trains on them....Mainly back in the early thirtys. Much of the abandoned ROW is still visible and one can see it would have been an interesting ride. [8D]

I've got the ultimate train trip in mind. It's a round the USA tour. Being from Kansas I'd start on the westbound Southwest Chief and go to LA, then up the coast to Seattle, across Marias pass on the Empire Builder to Chicago, ride the City of New Oreleans to New Orleans, take the train that goes through Atlanta, pass the Appalacians, into the Washington D.C., ride the Acela into New York or Boston, then back to Chicago along the water level route or through Sandpatch, then back to Kansas.

I used www.amtrak.com to calculate such a trip and it would take 2-3 weeks and $2,000+. Not including meals and hotels and any other stopovers. I'd want to ride the Grand Canyon Railroad, spend some time looking at LA Union Station, see the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, see Portland Union Station, sightsee in D.C., spend some time in New York Union Station and the Statue of Liberty (if they ever open it again), and visit historic Boston.

I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming [zzz][swg]

My dream trip would be take the Capital Limited from Chicago to Washington the to Los Angelels (VIA Jacksonville) then go to Seattle then to Vancouver then go back to Seattle to ride the Empire Builder Home to Chicago

My husband, younger daughter and I are movie fans, period. Although we don't have any westerns in our collection yet, there's always room. (As soon as we get another DVD changer, that is; our current 300-capacity one is nearly full.) Last night we watched an IMAX presentation on Egypt, then a two-hour Rush concert recorded in Rio. We've also got the usual adventure-type films, like Terminator and Indiana Jones movies; really stupid but funny ones, like Strange Brew and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure; the usual chick-flick assortment; a smattering of James Bond; current sci-fi films, like Contact and Star Trek; old sci-fi, like The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds (thinkin' of you, Zardoz!); some suspence/thrillers, like Sixth Sense; some classics, like Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon; and a sampling of musicals, such as Fiddler on the Roof, Cats, and Singin' in the Rain. No slasher/horror films, though. They give me nightmares. Oh, and the usual Disney/Pixar assortment, too. In a perfect world, I'd throw some Agatha Christie in there, as well as some Charlie Chan, and a bunch of Jackie Chan.

Locomutt, you've got to watch some good, old westerns with the missus. After all, she is an angel, right?[:)]

Ah - you are singing the Mookie's song! I used to "ride" the round hassock in the front room with my terrier "Lady". She was the head of the horse and endured many miles of old westerns! Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rocky Lane, and my personal favorite - Lash LaRue!
