Why did Alco PAs smoke like chimneys?

Holy compression, Professor Overmod, that's quite a thorough answer to my original question! Did that experience of putting your hand to a locomotive throttle at four years old lead you to a life of diesel engineering? <br /> <br />So the PAs just seemed like a great idea on the drawing board to the engineers, but in practial application the monster motors had some problems? Boy, if they'd just been able to engineer the inner workings as well as they engineered the aesthetics of the unit, they'd have come up with the perfect locomotive.
