Well Willy,
I can tell you that the TP&W is the Toledo, Peoria & Western (check spelling) but to tell the truth, I as well have never heard of the C&EI. Maybe someone else can help up out here?[;)][:D]

C&EI was the Chicago and Eastern Illinois.

The TPW is the Toledo Peoria & Western. Runs from Logansport, IN west accross northern IL to a connection with ATSF. It was owned by ATSF for a short time. It still operates as a short line under new management.

The C&EI is the Chicago & Eastern Illinois. It is a y shape railroad begining on the south side of Chicago. One led runs south to Evansville IN where it made connections with the L&N to go further south. The other leg ran west to St Louis where it made connections with the MoPac. The line was sold and split up, now between UP and CSXT.

C and EI was once part of the MP-TP-CEI system. The SP got the CEI when the UP took over the TP and MP. Now the UP has it back.

Sorry, Eric, SP never got C&EI. It went to MoPac (which sold part of it to L&N) in about 1967, and was actually merged into the MoPac system.

You may be thinking of the Chicago, Missouri & Western, which was spun off from the ICG (basically, the former GM&O/Alton main line from Joliet to St. Louis). This was SP's access to Chicago.

The C&EI was merged into the MP and L&N. They shared the line from Woodland Jct North (UP and CSXT still do operate it as a joint facility, dispatched by the UP). The MP got the western half south of Woodland Jct. and the L&N got the eastern half south of Woodland Jct. The MP portion is now operated by the UP and L&N portion is now operated by the CSXT.

And the old C&EI and the TP&W used to cross on a diamond at Watseka, IL. Now the above mentioned CSX/UP and Rail America'S TP&W.

L&N used to forward coal unit trains to TP&W at Watseka.

Cotton Belt tried to pursue a merger with C&EI in 1959, but the move was turned down by Southern Pacific's Board of Directors.

TP&W was owned or partly owned by Santa Fe for 29 years, that's more than a few.

OK, guys, then how come the SP (via the SSW) operated C&EIs Springfield line into Chicago circa 1990 to merger with Uncle Pete?

The SP bought the IC's line not the C&EI's (it may have been the ICG at that time). The C&EI never owned that line.

I checked a couple editions of "Handy Railroad Atlas" and they show the SPCSL as an IC/ICG route.

SPCSL isn't a reporting mark, its an acronym, "Southern Pacific Chicago Short Line" that was given after the SP bought the line. The SP bought ex Rock Island Golden State Route, the SPCSL, and the MP's Pueblo line during their last several years.

Almost right...it was Southern Pacific Chicago-St. Louis.

The Golden State route went to SP (SSW) as a result of the Rock Island's bankruptcy. They also got a line from KC to St. Louis, but never fully rehabilitated that line. Rights over the MP between those two points, as well as the Pueblo line, were obtained as a result of the MoP-UP.

The C & EI was once a part of the Frisco System. During the Depression of 1913 the C & EI and other parts of the system were separated from the Frisco. The Rock Island and Frisco were also in a partership of some sort and were also separated during this time. General B. F. Yoakum had been in charge of the Frisco and had doubled its size but after this Depression much of the system was taken away from the Frisco and Yoakum was replaced by W. C. Nixon. [:(]

SPCSL was a corporate entity within the SP family which existed to purchase the former Alton line between Chicago & St. Louis. The line was shown as such on State of Illinois highway maps.
SKCC was a similar entity which obtained trackage rights over BN between Kansas City and Chicago after SP's attempt to to buy the former MILW line between the same cities fell through.
