As the sun breaks over the horizon, at just around quarter to 6, the crew in Illinois Central-painted SD40-3 No. 6204 builds its train. Within an hour or so, they'll head back to the North Fond du Lac yard with 43 cars.

Throughout the month of August, I want to try a photography project that focuses on the trains in TRAINS Magazine's backyard. How many different pictures can be taken in a circle extending 10.27 miles from downtown Waukesha, Wis.?

I woke up way before my alarm clock the other weekend, got in the car, followed some muffled scanner transmissions, and found Canadian National local L510 putting its train together at North Duplainville, Wis. This local shuttles cars from CN's classification yard at North Fond du Lac, Wis., down to North Duplainville, 53 miles, where the cars are dropped for the CN locals based out of Waukesha.

What I like:

The unique light conditions, especially that glimmer of sunlight on the fuel tank. I'm glad I got up early!

What I don't like:

I had wanted this composition to be a bit wider to get more of the engine in, but just as I was starting to frame the picture the engine began moving, so I had to take the shot quick.
