Being a turn-of-the-century modeler of Nevada mining railroads I am always looking for small steam engines. These old 1970's 2-6-0s pop up on Ebay all of the time and I was wondering if it is possible to get them to run well. They either have the open frame motor in the tender or a very oversized open frame motor sticking out the back of the cab. I seem to remember Olsen et al, rebuilding the HOn3 versions into decent models using micromotors and gearheads back in the 1980s. Even with all of
While I don't begrudge the articles aimed at the beginner, I would like to see more articles each month that are in-depth and are aimed at the advanced modeler. I certainly wouldn't argue with more steam articles and more period modeling. I don't have a problem with the figures in aisles of the track plans. The do give some idea of the relative size of the aisles. - Nevin
It has been a long time since I was in Miami. There used to be a a nice hobby shop there. I am going to be visiting there this week. Any train stores worth checking out? - Nevin
I bought a few of their couplers from their website and spent some time installing them last night. These things are really nifty. They look great and function exactly as advertised if you follow their instructions for breaking them in. My layout is a relatively small shelf layout where you are never more than 10 inches from your train. I also will never have more than 25 cars on the layout. I plan on slow protypical operation sessions so "kicking the coupler to line it up" can easily be
My interest in the Arbour models kits is that the Sylvania Central 4-6-0 looks close to a number of T&T prototypes. I have previously heard about problems with their big engines but not the little ones. I remember the Locomotive Company engines when they came out. They looked very nice. I wish I bought a couple at the time. I wonder who owns their dies. All of these engines pop up on Ebay every once in a while. I may grab one just to see if there is anything that can be done with them. - Nevin
Unfortunately as has been discussed on the Bachmann website, the tenders are not interchangeble electronically. Hooking up the Vanderbilt tender to a 4-6-0 leads to a dead short despite the connectors being the same. There is a scheme for re-wiring the tender so that it will work but it is not a minor task. The alternative is to remove the circuit board and hard wire a decoder. Since I model the Tonopah and Tidewater and Bullfrog Goldfield RR which had 4-6-0s with Vanderbilt tenders I will eventually
Anyone assemble an Arbour models steam engine, especially a smaller one like a 4-6-0? Would you say it was harder or easier than a MDC or Bowser kit? Any serious pitfalls? How easy was it to get the mechanism running smoothly? - Nevin
I have a couple of Bachmann Spectrum steam engines that need to be converted to oil. While I could scratch build the oil bunker, I would rather use some kind of a kit. I have seen resin oil bunkers for O and On30 conversions. Kemtron used to make one in brass if I remember correctly. Is there anyone or any small company making oil bunkers for converting tenders in HO scale out there? Thanks, Nevin
If everything is going to be ready to run and there will be no kits, I would hope for two things: Make it so we can get into the car, especially passenger cars and secondly make the lettering relatively easy to remove. I have some roundhouse passenger cars that have defied all attempts to remove the lettering so that I can change the road name. Very frustrating! - Nevin
I've used foam for my last two layouts. Will never go back to conventional wood riser, plywood and homasote. This way is cheaper, much easier and cleaner. - Nevin
