Breezy and damp (and cool) in the wilds of NNY. At least the past few days have been extremely pleasant - I've had a lot of outside work to do at work (and still have some, but we'll muddle through). Busy weekend on the railroad. I'm working a Holiday Train Saturday Morning, then I become "stationmaster" at Utica Union Station for the Polar Express trains Saturday and Sunday evenings. Plus working on the trains. Should be interesting...
Do you let the market decide when it comes to police, firemen, traffic lights, water, sewerage, etc?
A form of that has happened - Subscription fire departments. You pay your money, you get fire protection. You don't pay your money, your neighbors stand around and watch while the fire department protects their property and lets your burn. Let's not forget Conrail - that half-hearted attempt to save a bunch of railroads that otherwise would have
There's one thing that's generally true about a product that's being marketed. There's a product to market. Can't market HSR if there isn't any (or it's not at least being seriously discussed).
Television weather reports?
Considering that TV itself was just aborning as a commercial medium immediately post WWII, it was a given that someone would have to be the first to give a TV weather report/forecast. Eliot appears to have been one of the first.
Second on the F's being a pain to switch with. We were stuck with two F's (back-to-back) at the beginning of the season. Normal operation has us doing a run-around at each end of the trip. You want to make sure you're on the firemen's side for the hitch, unless you want to walk a lot, climb through the cab, or have a helper to open the valve on the locomotive. Give me a roadswitcher for that duty any day. Usually we do have someone taking care of the anglecocks on the consist while
let's be smart and let the market decide where capital should go
Until you factor in people like Bernie Madoff and the infamous railroad "robber barons", whose take on where the money should go was in their pockets.
Looks like another fine fall day here in the woods of NNY. Might as well enjoy them while we can - let's do a "picnic" today for lunch. All the usual picnic fixin's, of course! Besides - it's "hump day" - the week is half over. Although every day at work is hump day for Carl...
Noah - I've found that it's best to attend such shows with a "shopping list." Through the year I'll invariably come up with something I'd like to add to my layout. It adds interest (and gets me to look through more displays) to have something more or less specific to look for. One year it was a fluted side baggage car to match the rest of my passenger cars. I found one at a reasonable price. I'll invariably blow it, but I try to go to such shows with a budget. I always
if he aint holding it close to his thigh it soon will be there and then he be hoding something besides a air hose
Yep. They'll catch a six-footer in the head, too...
Willy - you might be surprised at how many TV stations aren't what you picture them to be. All you can see is what is in front of the camera, when what may be behind the camera might be the sets for the "Morning Show" (or whatever it's called) and "Saturday at the Movies" and the only thing different between the noon, evening, and night-time news sets involves changing the backdrop behind the "window" and the plants on the windowsill. Remember, too, that many
