This is a highly "non-scientific" survey. How many state capitals lack passenger rail service? Off the top-of-my-head, I came up with MT, ND, SD, WI, WY, ID, NV, AZ, FL, KY, TN, OH, NH, ME, MD, and IA. I may have missed some, or gotten some wrong. I gave VT a "bye" with Montpelier Junction. I wonder how many lack freight rail service. They range all over the political spectrum. Where are the politicos, when we need them? Interesting, methinks. Bill
I ride Amtrak quite a bit -- four trips, so far, this year. I have traveled most of the routes since its inception. Poor service, surley crews, etc. seems to be confined in the CHI-NYP-WAS "Triangle of Snarl". I'll leave you to figure out why, but the old Pennsylvania RR "School of Snarl" graduates are mostly gone. On a brighter point, the crews in the west seem to be doing a great job. Even those that had to put up with UP's disregard of Amtrak (lots of siding-time =
Date: 20 Nov 2019 Memo from: BNSF Railway To: J. B. Hunt Transportation Cc: Schnieder Transportation, United Parcel Service Dear Ms. Hunt; in response to your inquiry, we must say "Yes!" Your trailers and containers will arrive on-time, provided the wind blows and the sun shines. Thank you for your faith in 'renewable' energy. Matt Rose, CEO, BNSF Railway
I wasn't really dispariging the state capitals that don't have passenger rail service. Some, like Montpelier, VT are really off the beaten-track, and farther from air service than the train. Maybe, if I was campaigning, I'd like to have my PV parked there (which could be done in Montpelier), where I could spout lies from a gilded platform. No. Annapolis doesn't get a "bye".
Wow! That would be neat: living downwind of a powerplant fueled by newly-mined disposable diapers! Go for it, Paul! Go for it, Allentown! Bill
I thought the idea of Wisconsin ordering/building "Talgos" was to, eventually, provide service to Madison. Looking at my maps, I don't think the routes, from CHI to MSN, via Janesville, or the round-about CHI-MKE-MSN are straight shots. They look pretty "curvey" to me. Then, again, politicians are involved... Bill
Enlighten me, please. I thought the DHS and TSA worked for the Department of Justice. Anyhoo, why did the TSA hire ten people, as screeners, at each of our silly "EAS" airports in Montana? Lots of donuts, or "Fry Bread", being eaten at those places! Bill P. S.: the fine citizens of "Podunk, KY" are offended by your misspelling and misrepresentation!
My first "solo" LD trip was from New York (NYG) to Chicago, to St. Paul, to Moose Jaw, to Calgary. NYC-CB&Q-SOO-CP, c.a. 1955. I was 16 and stopped for a few days at an 'old' buddie's place in Des Plaines, IL. I fell in love with the 15-cent McDonald's hamburgers, at the original stand. I wasn't too thrilled with his purple-yellow-and maroon Dodge "Royal Lancer", but it did get us around to many railroad yards. Never saw yellow & green trains before
Upon first perusal of Amtrak's 26 October "System Timetable", some connections have been restored. Train #1, the "Sunset Limited", now arrives in Los Angeles (LAX) in time to connect with Train #14, The "Coast Starlight". No more Ambus-"San Joaquin" round-about to catch #14 at Martinez. Train #14 now connects with Train #28, the "Empire Builder", at Portland (PDX). No more long bus trip from Klamath Falls, OR to Pasco, WA to catch #28. I don't
As a 24/7 scanner monitor, a BNI shareholder, and an old Army Security Agency soldier, I am always alert to what is "going on". I think that most of our problems, in Shelby, MT, stem from the locomotive crews not being adequately instructed/schooled/trained in the nuances of 'Distributed Power' hook-ups/add-ons. Now, with the "Jimmy Junk" coming up from the coal fields, it can only get worse. Grab some more coffee! You will not sleep tonight!!!
