First add a feeder wire near the stop point, and second, solder the railjoints. If those dont work, Im stumped.
Transition era is about 1945 to 1969 at the extreme ends. Transition on any RR starts the moment it gets its first diesel. During the era, there were MANY different types of colors used for boxcars, so yes, yellow and orange would do nicely, but dont make any color dominant.
I think self replacement would be the best and cheapest way. I've removed my wheelsets a few times to get to broken couplers and it was very easy to remove and replace.
Mine was a tiny N scale from my grandparents. I didnt play with it that much. I remember running it on the hot tub. Then they built me an HO 4 x 6 or so, one track, one siding, and one spur. I LOVED it so much, but then it was sold. From there, I got a Lionel for Xmas. I still have/play with it. Then, I moved to my current RR.

Find a good club, get some help, ask questions at your hobby shop, order a subscription to MRR which has plenty of help, hints and tips, and then order a subscription to the Dream Plan Build Video Series.
All of them are AMAZING!!!
I picked up some log cars, a shay, a water tower, and some roundouse/bluebox kits at the local train show.
