I'm sure we are all familiar with the idea of ripping 1/4" masonite into 1" strips and laminating them 4 or 5 wide to create a type of spline roadbed, (I prefer the idea of 4 because the small overlay from the cork roadbed would help cover the seam between the chicken wire/cardboard strips/what have you and the actual splines. And you get more roadbed ) but my question is, why 1"? These days people tend to use 1/2" plywood as subroadbed, so why not 1/4"x1/2" masonite
Just an interesting thought I had when thinking about trackwork. Has anyone tried this or thought of doing it? Like, say a manifest freight goes over a rough spot and a few wheels go on the ground. Instead of just laughing at the layout owner, rerailing t he cars in a matter of seconds, and continuing on. Maybe have the operator postpone train movements (if necessary) until the train crew ( ) can get the rerailer frog and rectify the problem. Or even for more severe derailments, until a track crew
I wonder if you could just use some flat pieces of styrene in a kind of a 'U' shape and then slip that down over the boiler. Once it was in-place, use putty and some sanding to get the rounded edges. I guess I need to get some toss-away locos to test it out on.
That was my first thought when I saw this. Only problem is that I don't know if a sheet of styrene would hold its shape when bent. If you just stuck 3 pieces together in a U shape, you
Out of all the putties pictured, I think you may be satisfied with the Milliput. Here is the description from Micro Mark:
Milliput...the Incredible Modeling Putty from England Milliput is the 2 part, easy-to-use epoxy putty that molds like clay and cures to the hardness of porcelain. Use for scratch building, sculpting, repairing, gap filling, pattern making and customizing. Ideal for military miniatures, ship model parts, dolls, dollhouse accessories, plastic models and thousands of other
Excellent tutorial. It has me drawing up plans for a 130' (Well, technically 130'6", which is what 18" scales out to in HO ) As I type this. Well, at least until I can get home to my CAD programs. (AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor rule! Thank you free student licenses! )
My honest advice? Ditch the Power-Loc track. I had that on train sets when I was 5 and realized then that it was worthless. I would advise to use Atlas Code 83 True Track or Bachmann E-Z Track if you are set on track with attached roadbed. (The Atlas track snaps off the roadbed for when you want to move to more advanced tracklaying) Or just regular Atlas Code 83 track, which would be my highest recommendation.
I've seen it done before by Joe Fugate on his layout. I frankly like the idea for things like ABBA setups. Only thing is, I would put the sound unit in the dummy B unit so that the sound comes from the center of the consist instead of one of the extremes. But thats just me. Good Luck with it! --Jake
KD? Never heard of them. Kadee makes a great coupler and uncoupler though! Sorry, I couldn't resist. And in all honesty, I don't understand the hype about magnetic uncoupling, a bamboo skewer or #0 flathead jewelers screwdriver and a pair of Xuron track cutters (for cutting off those awful looking trip pins) work just fine. Though, if you're dead set on magnetic uncoupling, Ive heard that trip pins bent too low/too high can affect uncoupling results, maybe you should try adjusting them
Old hats my rear! I'm 15 and I prefer to handlay turnouts. I've done nothing for a layout installation, (due to the fact that I will be moving within the next year I've put the layout on the backburner and began practicing modeling skills) but I have done a few just to see what it was like. No fancy tools, no jigs, just some fasttracks PC board ties, 0.015" rosin core solder, an Iron, and a wheelset as a track gauge. While the result was comparatively very poor, I still loved the
