QUESTION: (to a Lionel repairman) I recall a brief discussion we had regarding the thrust washers on Lionel Pullmor motors, and your preference was for the bearings to be lubed, and facing "upward".... so the lubricant grease, when warmed, would not ease/leak out. Am I correct? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REPLY: Your recollection is correct. I, too, have found the bearings installed both ways from the factory. Logically
What held the grease on the motors that used balls only and no cage. Bill
Good question. I imagine a thorough inspection of the motors of both types, after hours and hours of running, would indicate which method was the most appropriate. The answer may lie in why Lionel decided to use the "cage".

Lionel, (contrary to their original announcment) has recently stated that "Legacy" upgrades/conversion kits for prior Lionel products will not be available. Reason: Cost. It would be necessary to replace all of the electronics AND the motor for such a conversion. In the long run, it would be much cheaper to purchase a brand new Legacy locomotive.
Remag. wouldn't be necessary if there is a way to remove and replace the Magnetraction magnet in the frame. While some of the Alnico alloys (esp. 5 and 8) make very strong magnets, they can lose it very easily--unlike the rare-earth magnets. So, is it difficult to replace the magnet in a steamer?
I posed this question to someone who has long-time Lionel train repair experience: Quote: Most Lionel diesels with magnetraction have the magnets in the axles
What's the best lighting kit for Athearn passenger cars? I'm fairly new to HO model railroading. I purchased several older HO Athearn passenger cars that I would like to add lighting, and possibly passenger seating. What lighting kit would you recommend for this conversion? Is an LED light set a better choice, since it consumes less power and lasts longer? I understand that the orginal Athearn #9200 lighting kit had only one light bulb, which was quite inadequate. I also understand I will
Several of my postwar steamers have lost much of the mag. in their wheels. Is there some fairly easy way to remag. them?
While I have not personally performed this proceedure, I did find this information on the Internet several years ago. How To Restore Magne-Traction to Your Locomotive
I would love to use a section of flex track in this one section. Is there a way to connect it to the 027 on both ends? Thanks
We've connected Gargraves Flex Track to Lionel "O" quite successfully on the helix, and I imagine connecting to Lionel 027 (with the proper track pins) will work just as well.
