Just checked out the Railrunner site. Very, very interesting. As with the Railmate, I hope someone gives this type of technology a shot.
Both Greyhounds and CNSF make some good points here about the IMS possibilites/disadvantages for an area like western Iowa/South Dakota. I can understand the points CNSF is making but yet at the same time I, too, am perplexed (not to mention bloody disappointed) at CN's seeming unwillingness to experiment with intermodal service on the former IC/ICG/CC Iowa Division mainline. I believe that there are some exciting possibilities there and this would be a great opportunity for the new Railmate
c) This is perishable, presumably time-sensitive business. Is reasonably truck-competitive rail service possible? You can't just look at a map and say "they could do it this way". If the volume isn't enough for a daily 6,000 ft. train, you need to ride existing trains. Understanding the existing local service plan, including connections to the larger network, is the key. From what I've seen, the existing rail traffic out of the Sioux area is nowhere
I've seen some of the early test-runs over the last couple of weeks; wish I could have been in town on Saturday to get a railpass and ride the thing (darn it). I'll be particularly interested to see what the ridership levels are like in the first few weeks. Presumably, there should be a marked increase during inclement weather periods when we get into the winter season - which hopefully is aways off yet. If this thing works out well (and I hope it does) there are obviously some other opportunites
I can barely remember the IC's black w/green diamond logo from the 60's which in retrospect looked pretty sharp, IMHO. The orange and white scheme that IC/ICG had in the 70's I thought was okay but was hard to keep clean. The slate gray and orange was acceptable (I guess) but that short-lived solid orange scheme (came out in 1978 IIRC ) mercifully died a quick death.
The CN's ex-IC/ICG/CC Iowa Division mainline had ATS between Waterloo and Ft. Dodge (possibly out to Tara as well) but the Chicago Central had that taken out by 1986 or 1987.
Have seen both NS and CSXT advertisements and think they've been done well. It's a small, first step perhaps but I hope other Class I's follow their lead. True, it's somewhat different for our industry when it comes to advertising BUT, in the end, it's all about brand recognition and I think the other Class I's need to hop on and find a way to strut their stuff.
It's true too! "By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world. Generally speaking, and in relative comparison to other modes, freight railroads perform their functions and maintain the freight rail infrastructure without the need for government funds. Freight rail infrastructure maintenance and capacity enhancements, however, can only occur with Federal legislation and policies that allow rail
Yep. Just got done reading the article over lunch. Ouch. This is a black, black eye for BNSF.
Rams Guy, Great expert nonbiased sources you quoted second above. Mac
Could have been worse I suppose. Always could have snared something from that wonderfully unbiased L.A. (a.k.a. Trojan) Times.
