Welcome to the forum. Don't worry about making mistakes and changing your mind. Just don't be upset about purchasing things that you don't end up using. Ask me how I know! If you don't come up with a good plan, try using one from Chip's website here . There were a few contests on this forum that produced some decent layouts as far as 4x8's go. I know everyone will try to save you from the great downfalls of the 'sacred sheet', but almost everyone started there. I didn't
Ken, you certainly are a fearless modeler. I don't know if I could get myself to tear into a $400 loco! I don't want to take too much time, so I'll just show a couple of pictures. My first layout was a 4x8 table in the basement of my previous home. I had a tendency to do part of a project, then I would learn how to do it properly later! I'm glad that I got to try many different parts of building a layout before I had to tear it down. I'm taking much more time to do my current
Not having someone fill this new found free time with her interests, priceless!
Tis the season for train trips! Though I took many more pictures than this on our trip, I don't want to bore you. Here are a few snaps from the train ride from Minneapolis to Winona MN. We basically followed the Mississippi river the whole time. We ended up riding in the Amtrak coach. Oh it's old alright, 1985! Oh well, it had a nice ride with clean bathrooms!
That's funny you say that about the direction and being able to hear the locomotive. We noticed that you could hear it on the return trip. I could only guess that there is a very gradual grade going down to the Winona area. That's all I could think off.
I was on the Sunday trip to Winona. Since we were in coach, we ended up on the Amtrak car. I had hoped for a heavyweight, but without that, I didn't mind riding in a fairly new car. We were so far back from the locomotive anyway it didn't matter. May as well have comfortable seats and new bathrooms. All in all we enjoyed the trip. I actually enjoyed the North Shore Scenic Railroad trip last year better. We got to ride in a heavyweight behind the Soo pacific 2719. That was so close to the
Oh, that's what it is! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
Art, I was hoping that you would return some day. I thought maybe you had moved on to greener pastures. Welcome back!
Wayne, shhhh, the layout police want you to think they are a myth! Now you have me thinking of adding an arbitrary tunnel.
For those of you that have seen pictures of my trestle in progress, you may recognize this first one. It's the Red Jacket Trestle on the former Milwaukee Road just south of Mankato MN. The second picture is of the former Union station in Mankato. It was owned by the CNW/Omaha Road and still stands today. It is now the home of a few attorneys and my financial advisor. His location had no bearing on why I chose him!
