Froggy, Are the bulbs LED's or incandescent bulbs? If they're LED's, the polarity will matter. If they're incandescents, polarity makes no difference at all. The polarity is apparently not standardized across all manufacturers of wall warts, so your best bet for checking polarity is to simply use a volt meter. Wiring lights isn't terribly difficult, just time-consuming. I'd strongly recommend using an accessory buss line around your layout to hook the lights to...it'll
One more suggestion, and apologies for jumping in late here...I just spent the weekend running my San Francisco Chief on our club layout for our open house. I had problems with the ends of the truck sideframes hitting the sides of the car, but only on certain cars, notably the diner and dorm/lounge. I ended up gently shaving down the insides of the skirts at an angle, keeping the outer surface intact. That gave the clearance I needed. I also tend to remove the contact plates that tend to stick WAY
Folks! To those of you that replaced couplers, what # KaDee did you use? Thanks, Mobilman44
I used what I had on hand (# 5), but any of the medium length, center-set shank couplers will work, I think. If you wanted to bring them a little closer together, you could put a medium-length on one end and a short on the other, though. Say, a medium on the vestibule end, and a short on the other. I wouldn't really recommend doing that unless you had large
Hey, Chuck! Thanks for coming up yesterday. It was great to meet you guys in person! Which bridge were you talking about there, the one over the yard, or the lift bridge across the entrance? As far as the Black Widow caboose, that was actually owned by the guy who was helping Fred out this weekend...Fred actually only owns QA&P, Frisco, CB&Q, and a little ATSF equipment. He models what he saw on his home road. Hope you guys enjoyed the tours! Hopefully next year we'll be able to make
Oh, yes. Christmas, 1974. I was all of four years old, and Santa Claus brought me a Lionel "Cannonball" train set, plus a couple of extra cars. I still have it, though age has taken its toll...one of the side rods is broken, and one of the cars became brittle and shattered. But that is one train that I will probably never get rid of. Come to think of it, I still have the engine and caboose from my first HO train set too...the Tyco "Golden Eagle".
Are Surgents at all usable with passenger cars with diagrams? And also, after looking at the videos I must say that Kadee still look good. And without trip pins the space between cars looks more prominent that between Kadee coupled cars. I think in real life there are bunch of hoses going between passenger cars. Next time I need to take a note when riding on Amtrak.
I experimented with them on a pair of Walthers passenger cars a while back. Using the magnetic
I used Peco switch machines on my first layout 17 years ago. I found them difficult to wire and the auxiliary switch attachments reduced their throwing capability. They are also apt to enlarge the hole in the tiebar and are difficult to mount under a wooden baseboard - unless you fix them directly under the turnout in the slots provided. My main motive for retiring my Peco machines was to a different switch machine with an inbuilt switch - I used Seep (now Gaugemaster
For me, model railroading is a creative outlet. I enjoy working with my hands, creating things. And having been a train addict as long as I can remember, it just seemed natural for me to take up the hobby. Of course, my parents (and now my wife!) would say that the hobby really took me! For specifics, it's about learning new skills...woodworking, electrical work, etc. It's about recreating a part of the past in miniature. It's about the people you meet and the friends you make. And it
