I had the same problem and got a BBT mod. Nary a problem since then. Go for it.
OK, just in case I was wrong, and what missmee really wanted from this grizzled group of railroad nuts (and part-time weapons purveyors) was a live naval torpedo, I'll indulge him (or her). You can easily obtain a nuclear torpedo from the Acme Mail Order Torpedo Works, 6954 Main St., Seattle, Washington 98103. They'll accept a cashiers check or money order drawn on any Nigerian bank.
Missmee, are you referring to the torpedos that railroad workers placed on the tracks as a warning? They would explode with a loud bang when a train wheel passed over them, alerting the crew that there was a problem up the line.
I just checked out his website. Wow! Those are the best I've ever seen. I'm tempted.
C'mon Dave. I live in Gardnerville (about an hour south of Reno via 395) where we get monster winds. I mount my buildings on a square of 3/4 inch plywood, dig a shallow hole for the base and cover it with crusher fines. Some of the Aristo buildings I have are heavy enough that I don't have to mount them at all. The only casualty so far is my water tower blew over once. Trust me. You can build a garden RR outside in Reno. Just avoid skyscrapers.
If you are like me and don't want to spend a lot of money, try this site. I have two of these units--one in my 0-4-0 and one in my Bachmann Annie. Very nice sound and the installation is simple. http://www.smallscalerailway.com/
Local hobby shops are a dying breed, I'm afraid. My LHS in Carson City folded a couple years back and, aside from Reno Rails, the other LHSs in Reno carry very little G scale stuff. The internet truly is our friend, but it's the LHS's worst enemy. Eric
Ray, as a longtime Nevadan, I believe you captured the essence of the old mining towns in my state. Goldfield is an especially interesting place to visit. I like old mining cars and an old-timer who lives right on US 95 has a nice collection on display (which he refuses to sell). As for Gabbs, NV, I will not venture within fifty miles of that place. It is the tarantula capital of Nevada and I am a strong arachnaphobe. I'm told that during certain periods (mating season?) the roads are black with
Good for you! We haven't had rain here in months. It's the dryest season on record.
That is a great layout, Matt. The setting is beautiful. Very lifelike.
