Many years ago as a junior in college and a student of industrial design, a class project was to design a "unique" piece of furniture, and present with working drawings, renderings and scale model, and engineering and production data. I came up with a system of modular wall hanging units that brought me a top grade. After graduation I found my exact designs in a furniture store. Research proved that the professor had taken my designs and sold them to a furniture company in North Carolina
Sure....BLI's system just ain't as good. My BLI J3a could be a lemon, so an actual comparision would not be fair. My J3a just does not put out out enough smoke, and my first attemp at filling it in accord with specs, flooded it as it would hardly smoke. . As it dried a bit, it became better, but in my opinion, these are two different designs and systems. I do appreciate that BLI's system is DCC. I have with help found MTH's DSC system works well with DCC...just not as many goodies
This could be nuts, but I found when I run smoke for long periods on my MTH locos, that the conductivity seems to improve. Could the chemicals in the smoke fluid or residue be a conductive like brake fluid or fine oil such as Wahls? This in no way is conclusive, but I'm not imagining the improvement with trains running behind the smoke units....or am I? HZ

There is discussion about Jan Willard of Mt Airy, Maryland and his brass custom work and repair business . Maryland. Let me further elaborate...Jan is by far the finest person in this field I have met in the last several decades. I don't think he'll mind if I share his phone number with you...301 865 3051. A point of interest,..for years when I did custom work for others, I'd sell blocks of time for $25 which was always refundable or credited to the job when completed. I'd place a
[quote user="8500HPGASTURBINE"] EBAY John, When it comes down to it that's the place to go. I really hate to say that EBAY beats everyone HANDS DOWN , it's not even close. You will find OMI and other brass that NOBODY has. You are going to get your other replies of favorate hobby shops that sell brass but NOBODY beats Ebay. You will also get brass for prices that you will not find in other hobby shops. Now there is the high $$$ brass, but if you look and be patient you can get a
I gotta jump in here. Ebay is by far the largest venue for brass models today. It is also the easiest way to be disappointed as many sellers do not have the proper knowledge of the model they are listing. Often I have seen wrong descriptions, poor photos, and notes on listings...."Sales final". To buy an expensive model in "the blind" and have little recourse should it not be what is expected is insanity at best. Then there are many who find that they have way overpaid as they
Anyone hear of anything about John Winston, operator of Balls of Brass now living (I hope still) in Stevensville, MT.? HZ
Jeez! Any details? Winston was from my area....central Maryland (and NewYork). I heard a vague rumor this morning about John passing away, but could hardly believe it. While in Maryland he was a fixture of the Great Scale Model Train (Timonium) show. I was his very first brass customer purchasing a Westside models SP A6 4-4-2 in 1976, He moved to Montana several years ago and we lost touch. My deepest condolences to his wife, Toba and family. HZ
Hey guys, Thanks for the fine comments about my book. Some background behind the production if anyone is interested.......... In 2002 I married a full college professor who has written quite a bit besides having to "publish or perish" so often. Being retired since 1987, and just playing with my toy trains on a daily basis, I felt I had to do something a bit more intellectual just to keep up with Sandy. I was beginning to think she was seeing me as "unliterate"., and when I came
